Recently, a case has been reported where a woman, resident of Sector 37 was duped of around 2 Lakh rupees by a fraudster who befriended her on instagram. The accused person introduced himself as Leonardo Antonia and started exchanging messages with the lady.
A few days later, the suspect claimed he had sent her a gift, but she had to get it released from customs at Mumbai airport by paying some amount. The suspect tricked her into transferring money to different bank accounts.
He further tried to trick the lady by saying that the gift package contains £45,000 and she has to pay more money to get it converted.
The complainant realised she had been duped after a while and approached the police. A complaint has been registered and investigation is in process.
In this era of social media and online friendships , online fraud cases are increasing day by day. Many other online fraud cases have also been reported recently including a resident of Raipur Khurd who lost Rs. 34,090 to electricity bill fraud .
