Punjab contract employees to stage protest demanding rights

Due to mounting frustrations, contract employees across various departments in Punjab have taken a bold stand by announcing a three-day road blockade from August 14 to 16.

They also plan to encircle the CMs house as an act of defiance. Their grievances stem from the state government's failure to honour pre-election commitments, including regularization of services, improved salaries, and social security benefits.

Balwinder Singh, the spokesperson for the Contract Employees Action Committee, expressed the collective sentiment that the government's indifference has left them with no choice but to escalate their protest.

For over a decade, these contract employees have been diligently serving departments crucial to society, such as education, health, sanitation, and power, yet they continue to struggle with meager wages. Attempts to engage with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other officials through meetings and letters have fallen on deaf ears, forcing the committee's hand towards direct action.

As tensions escalate, the outcome of this protest could hold significant implications not only for Punjab's contract employees but for the broader discourse on labor rights in the region.
