Punjab and Haryana High Court bans the use of coloured lights in vegetable markets

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has prohibited the vegetable and fruit sellers from using "coloured" lights. The HC said that it deserves to be ensured that “no lights other than the white lights are used by vegetable and fruit vendors."

The Court observed that "coloured" lights are used by the vendors in Grain market, Sector 26 and the weekly markets. These lights are synchronised as per the colour of the fruits and vegetables. Thus, customers are deceived into buying them as they are misled as to the true characteristics and quality of the fruits and vegetables.

This direction of High Court is aimed at promoting 'consumer welfare' which has assumed a vital role in the 21st century. It is an embodiment of the maxim 'Caveat Venditor' i.e. Seller beware.
