On February 9, 2023, the J&K government was informed by the Mines Secretary followed by which The Geological Survey of India (GSI) claimed that lithium reserves have been found in the Salal-Haimana area Jammu & Kashmir.
"For the first time, lithium reserves have been discovered, and that too in Jammu and Kashmir," Mines Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj said. The reserve is estimated to be around 60 lakh tons.
Lithium is one of the most rare and sought-after minerals globally. While it has many uses, it's mostly in demand for batteries of cell phones, laptops, electric gadgets and hybrid vehicles. Till date, India imports Lithium from Australia and Argentina.
This ‘cosmic’ mineral has been said to change India's fate as India has found a new hope in the global competitive market. It would also help to highly cater up to the electric vehicle ideas.
