In a bid to promote and make the defense services more gender equal, the Indian Navy and IAF will now allow women officers to volunteer for the special commandos forces which are the Marine commandos and Garud commandos respectively, as stated by the concerned officials.
The decision was taken in previous years to allow women in elite wings and has come to light only now. According to another official, the option to become Marcos will be available for female officers and sailors who will join the services next year through the Agniveer Scheme.
The women officers can choose to volunteer to join the elite forces, Marcos if they meet the eligibility criteria as no one is directly assigned to these units, one has to volunteer for it. The Marcos are trained to carry out a variety of tasks, strikes on enemy warships, and offshore installations as well as diving operations and reconnaissance missions to support naval operations. They can operate on land, air, and sea.
Garud forces were formed by IAF in 2004 after a terrorist incident in Srinagar when 4 terrorists armed with AK-47s and grenades attempted forced entry into IAF's Awantipora Airbase.
Previously, physiological, psychological, and cultural reasons were cited to deny important positions to women in the military forces. But after the Air force decided to induct women in 2015, the Navy is also giving women officers more roles alongside their male counterparts. The army has also allowed them to fly helicopters.
