"Government of India Implements Import Restrictions to Boost Local Manufacturing and Secure Citizens' Security"
The Government of India has issued a notification prohibiting the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers with immediate effect. A licence or government permission will now be required to import such products. This action is expected to benefit the Make in India programme as well as local manufacturing under the recently relaunched production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT equipment, as well as secure our citizens' security. It would help both domestic and foreign businesses.
The notification from ministry of commerce and industry stated that 'import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra compact form factor PCs, and servers falling within Harmonised system of nomenclature code 8741 shall be restricted.' This limitation does not apply to passengers who have these goods in their luggage.
Additionally, exemptions will be granted for the import of up to 20 such items in each consignment for R&D, testing, evaluation, repair and re-export, and product development. These imports will be permitted only if they are used for exploration purposes. These items are not for sale on the general market.
Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President, IDC India, commented, "While the goal of this measure is to promote local manufacturing, our ecosystem is not yet prepared for such a large-scale assembly."This change is aimed to boost the manufacturing segment of our country and has the potential to generate growth and employment opportunities for the citizens of the nation.
