In yet another endeavour to claim right on Chandigarh railway station, the speaker of Haryana legislative assembly, Gyanchand Gupta has requested U.T administrator and CM Haryana, to consider writing to centre for renaming it to Chandigarh-Panchkula railway station.
Earlier in 2022, the Chief Minister of Haryana, Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar had written a letter to the Union Railway Minister, Sh. Ashwini Vaishnaw, in this regard. This request however did not go down well with the Punjab Congress leaders who vehemently opposed the same. Punjab has also been raising objections on grant of land to Haryana for building new assembly in Chandigarh.
The railway station holds a special place in Prime Minister Modi's heart as in his initial political career he boarded the train to Delhi from here. He showed his affection in form of a massive grant of rupees 511 crores for the renovation of the railway station. Infact, his visionary, the Vande Bharat Express train was also launched from here.
Given the strategic importance of the railway station there is a tussle between Punjab and Haryana over its renaming which might result in more stakes in the station for Haryana
