On Tuesday, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, Banwarilal Purohit approved the revision of door-to-door waste collection charges. The charges will be fixed on the basis of the nature of the work and classified on the basis of the size of commercial and institutional units.
According to the current collection rate, there was a flat fee of 500 for waste for all kinds of commercial businesses, including stores, restaurants, etc. But the units without a water metre facility were not paying for it. The waste bill will now be paid annually along with the property tax.
The market welfare associations (MWAs) had asked the civic council to propose the updated rates because they wanted to charge varying amounts for individuals who produce wet, dry, or both types of garbage.
With the new tariffs, MC hopes to increase revenue while also enhancing collection and door-to-door garbage management in commercial zones.
