Chandigarh administration has come up with a strategy to combat pollution in the city i.e National Vehicle Scrap Policy. It is aimed to promote low-emission and electric vehicles.
Admission is planning to scrap those pollution-causing government vehicles which have been running for 15 years. A private firm in Industrial Area Phase 1 has been granted permission to open the scrap center. A list is prepared of 98 such vehicles including 8 CTU buses. After the scraping, a certificate of deposit will be issued and sent to the respective departments.
The general public can also take advantage of this system. They can also switch to new cars and get their old ones scrapped. Talking about the benefits of this to the general public, they will get tax rebates and discount offers on the purchase of a new car in the same category. On registration, they would receive a road tax rebate of up to 25%. Several other benefits and schemes have been decided to encourage the use of low-emission vehicles for the benefit of the environment.
