The Tamil Nadu Government passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021 (Anti-NEET bill) on Monday. Chief Minister MK Stalin had introduced the bill that seeks a permanent exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for its state's students.
All parties in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), except for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stood in support of the bill, giving their votes in its favour.
This comes after a 20-year old student had died by suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district, just hours before taking the NEET exam. Earlier in 2017, State Topper S. Anitha’s suicide had sparked a major anti-NEET row as well.
